The Roman Theater was opened in 1917 by Steve Roman. The 500-seat theater, which included a balcony, was remodeled in Art Moderne style in 1935 to the plans of architect Bjarne Moe. It has been remodeled and renovated several times since. The Roman Theater still operates today, showing first-run films in addition to live entertainment, such as concerts and plays.

While the Roman may very well be the oldest continually operating movie theater in Montana it is very definately not the only small town theater still operating in Montana. There is a theater in Hardin, Forsyth, White Sulpher Springs and quite a number of other single screeners still going strong in Montana and the small population in these town is whats kept them going. There is no room nor a need for anything much over two screen in any small Montana town.
Mark55, The Roman theatre was “PROUD TO HAVE BEEN THE FIRST TO INTRODUCE WIDERANGE WESTERN ELECTRIC SOUND SYSTEM”. this on July 27.1934.“BOTTOMS UP” with Spencer Tracy was the movie playing.
Now Christie digital projection system and Dolby 5.1 sound.
When I was growing up in Red Lodge (1955-1965), it was run by two sisters with the last name Roman. Did the same family operate it for over fifty years? Fond memories of the Saturday afternoon matinees of Roy Rogers cowboy movies.
