Grand Opera House

This large theatre occupied the upper stories of a three story brick commercial block which was likely completed in 1900, as the map for that year shows stores on the ground floor, but the theatre space ‘From Plans’.

This was a fine structure, quite tall, with numerous arched windows on the second story, and a mix of shapes on the third, providing plenty of light for the entry and lobby. It’s unclear when exactly movies began to be shown, but this was definitely screening films in 1928.

Sadly, this entire block was lost in a disastrous fire on June 27, 1931, which was sparked by a fireworks explosion in a drugstore across the street on the southern corner. The current structure was erected around 1932.

Note that the historical address was 444-460 Main Street, but the street was renamed and renumbered in 1939.

Thanks to Ken Roe for some information.
