Empire Cinema Bordon

Located in Bordon Military Camp, Bordon, Hampshire. The Camp Cinema stated out as a wooden hut. It was operated by the Army, Navy, Air Force Institute in the 1930’s and was equipped with a GB sound system, being re-named Empire Cinema.

In 1938 the County Cinemas chain took over the Empire Cinema and it was converted to the plans of architect David Evelyn Nye into a 475-seat cinema. It re-opened on 29th October 1938, operated by W.J. May and County Cinemas. County Cinemas were taken over by the Oscar Deutsch chain of Odeon Theatres Ltd. in September 1939. In 1967 or 1968 the Empire Cinema was sold by the Rank Organisation to an independent operator. It was closed in August 1973 and has since been demolished.

Camp Road saw a large development of housing being built in the mid 80’s, and sadly, this cinema was swept away back then.
