Star Picture Palace

Situated in the east London inner city district of Dalston, the Star Picture Palace was opened around the end of 1909 by The British Amusement Company. In the raked floor auditorium the projection box was at the rear of the building, so patrons presumably entered at the screen end.

Alterations were proposed by architect Frank Harris in 1912, but did not proceed, possibly due do issues with the positioning of exits. The operators were considering selling the business in 1913, and even contemplated letting it to the Belgian Refugees Home on Sundays.

Eventually, failure to reach agreement with the council over alterations probably marked the end of life for the Star Picture Palace, and it was closed by 1915.

It is not know what uses the building has been through over the years, but its sub-divided use by retail outlets has been ongoing for many years. The auditorium was demolished in November 2021, but the front is still retained in retail use.
