Alamo Drafthouse Staten Island

The new Alamo Drafthouse Staten Island theatre was planned to open in late-2019 on the former site of the UA Hyland Plaza 5. The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic stalled those plans and it opened on July 22, 2022.

From Alamo Drafthouse Press Release:We haven’t had much news to share with you all about our new theater on Staten Island, but the so-called Forgotten Borough is forgotten no longer. We are excited to announce that construction is wrapping up at our newest New York City outpost at The Boulevard shopping plaza on Hylan Boulevard.

Our last update on our Staten Island theater was – checks notes – 2018 (?!), when we revealed the concept behind our RZA-curated, kung-fu-themed bar The Flying Guillotine (named after the Shaw Bros. classic MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE). Rest assured, though, that our design and construction teams have been hard at work on this action-packed new location.

Like all Alamo Drafthouse cinemas, our Staten Island theater will offer a full food and drink menu with appetizers, entrees, and desserts available, as well as full bar options including innovative cocktails, spirits, award-winning milkshakes, and a huge selection of local draft beers brought right to your seat by our amazing ninja servers. Staten Island will be home to 9 screens ranging in size from 200 seats to 37, with a total of 893 fully-reclining seats for you to enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters, indie titles, classics, not-so-classics, foreign films, insane rediscoveries, restorations, rarities, documentaries, cult stuff, music stuff, interactive parties (whew) and lots more. From family-friendly sing-a-longs to B-movie trash, it’s all under one gigantic roof here in Staten Island. And, yes, there will be 35mm!

In addition to a vast menu of beers, wines and cocktails, The Flying Guillotine bar will also feature a video store offering free rentals from an exhaustive collection of titles, including martial arts classics personally curated by RZA. It’ll also have an archive of memorabilia and posters that cover the vast span of kung fu film history.

OK, so your next question is probably going to be, “When do you open?” We don’t have a solid opening date and don’t want to commit to anything just yet, but things are progressing very quickly, so let’s just say it will be sooner rather than later. There still are a few minor things to be finished before we can start showing movies, but below you’ll find a few photos giving you a sneak peek at what all is happening inside the theater. We have a lot of fun stuff planned to celebrate our opening and to stay up to date on an exact opening date and any special events, sign up for Alamo Victory at drafthouse.com/victory.

From Boxoffice Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to Open Staten Island Location on July 22nd Exhibition News • Boxoffice Staff • July 14 2022

Courtesy Alamo Drafthouse Alamo Drafthouse Cinema welcomes film lovers to their new location on July 22nd, Alamo Drafthouse Staten Island. During the soft opening running through July 27th, guests will receive 25% off food and non-alcoholic beverages. Occupying 44,726 square feet of The Boulevard Shopping Center at 2636 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY, the 9-screen, 893-seat theater is the company’s fourth New York-area location, joining Yonkers, Downtown Brooklyn, and Lower Manhattan. The location will also house Flying Guillotine, a kung fu-themed collaboration with Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA that’s part bar and part martial arts museum. Flying Guillotine will feature posters and memorabilia spanning the history of kung fu cinema.

In addition to a tap wall of 45 draft beers, guests will enjoy a cocktail menu featuring nine classic cocktails, as well as nine original cocktails designed by bar manager Vincent Favella (previously of Brooklyn’s House of Wax and Lower Manhattan’s The Press Room). The space will also feature a giant 16’ Flying Guillotine over the entry to the bar and a board-breaking photo opportunity. Any purchase at the bar gets guests a token for the Flying Guillotine claw game, exact replicas designed by Pretty in Plastic of the three different flying guillotines used in all the Flying Guillotine films.

“Our Staten Island theater has been a long time coming, and I think we’ve got something that’s really going to wow our New York guests,” says Alamo Drafthouse CEO Shelli Taylor. “We’re committed to providing an elevated moviegoing experience that serves the great Staten Island community, and this new theater is a perfect expression of that commitment.”

“Bringing the coolest movie experience to ‘Shaolin’,” says RZA, “with a bar designed with the aesthetics of the Wu-Tang vibe – like Flying Guillotine – and an extensive collection of memorabilia, this location will surely be a place of many fun memories for Staten Islanders.”

“The modern action genre was undeniably born out of the kung fu movie explosion of the early 1970s,” says Tim League, founder and executive chairman of Alamo Drafthouse. “After Enter the Dragon, audiences craved more of this new visceral excitement, and the movie studios responded and were forever changed in its wake. Without this influence, there is no Matrix, there is no Mission: Impossible, and there is no action genre as we know it today. We love this legacy and want to celebrate and share its rich history throughout the walls of the Flying Guillotine bar and the theater itself.”

The location opens ahead of a string of new Alamo Drafthouse locations due later this year and during 2023 in Arlington, VA; St. Louis, MO; Boston, MA; and Chicago, IL.

I guess they did not put in 70mm in Staten Island like many of the other Alamo Cinemas. Looks like only one semi large auditorium the rest tiny flat screens. Same lights and wall covering like all the other Alamo places.
