Located in the south Melbourne suburb of Malvern. The New Malvern Theatre was opened on 1st June 1920 with “The Last of the Mohicans” and a stage prologue “The Spirit of the Movies”. It was built by William Alfred Turner and leased out to Associated Theatres Property Ltd. It was designed by British born architect Lewis Kaberry of the architectural firm Kaberry & Chard. Seating was provided in stalls and a large circle. There were two boxes at circle level, one on each side of the proscenium. Not long after opening it was taken over by the Hoyts Theatres chain. It was closed on 4th February 1987 with Paul Hogan in “Crocodile Dundee”. It was demolished later that year. An office block now stands on the site.
