Mountain Grove Drive-In

The Autovue 60 Drive-In opened in July 1952. The car capacity was listed at 300. It was renamed the Mountain Grove Drive-In in the early-1970’s. The drive-in was owned by Edgar Agae. It was still listed as open in the late-1970’s. Most of its life the people called it the ‘60 Drive-In’, being located on State Street which is Highway 60 thus it got its common name of the ‘60 Drive-In’.

The old marquee out front says Hills Flea Market. Address 10366 US 60 Business. Using that address it maps right to the old drive-in.

The October 22, 1955 issue of Boxoffice said that Mr. and Mrs. John Castner and Mrs. Wanona Allen of Springfield had bought the Cameo Theatre and 60 Drive-In at Mountain Grove from the Dean Davis family. Castner had been manager of the Cameo since 1935 and of the drive-in for the last three years.

A few more, earlier details. Boxoffice, Sept. 10, 1955: “Mrs. Winona Allen of Springfield, Mo., widow of ? Allen, for many years the Dallas manager of National Screen, is a partner with John Castner of Mountain Grove in the ownership of the 60 Drive-In on Route 60 and the Cameo Theatre, which they purchased recently from William Dean Davis of West Plains. The management and ownership of the drive-in and theatre was formally assumed by Mrs. Allen and Castner on Sunday (4).”
