Sphinx Cinema

This art house cinema originated in 1912, when it was a banqueting hall which included films. Its frequent name changes were due to changes in ownership - Patria Cinema until 1920, Regent Cinema 1920-1924, Splendid Cinema 1924-1928. In that year the renamed Cine Palace was remodelled in an Art Deco style by Geo Haider. However this was considered dated in 1952 when more updating gave the cinema the name Plaza Cinema.

In 1977 the cinema was tripled as the Calypso Cinema and had a first floor café. It has been known as the Sphinx Cinema since 1986 and now has 5 screens plus a large ground floor café/bar with outside seating. The Gent Design Museum hold sketches, plans and photos of the Sphinx Cinema over the years.

In October, 2001, I stayed in Ghent & as part of the film festival, enjoyed “The Verdict” (1982) here in a basement auditorium which my notes indicate sat 120 in what was then a 4 screener.
