The Westside Theatre opened as a single screen on November 16, 1967 with Robert Stack in “The Currupt Ones”. It could accommodate 500 patrons and was later converted to a twin (early-1970’s). The theatre closed on May 13, 1984 and the building now houses a church.

Westside Theater was located in Westside Shopping Center South. It, and what was once a supermarket next to it, have been turned into an off-track betting parlor by enclosing the alley between the two.

I went to school with the son of the owners. According to him the theater was shut down because the shopping center didn’t like the ‘crowd’ it attracted.

I thought it closed down because no one ever went there. On the day that Rocky 2 opened in 1979 I watched the matinee surrounded by three other customers. Your comment surprises me because the big controversy back then was the nearby Shakey’s pizza place which was an attraction for underage juveniles with fake IDs to purchase beer, get drunk and act like jerks.

It closed at almost exactly the same time the Belle Promenade Cinema opened, which I don’t think was coincidental.

Wow that must been around mid 1983 or early 1984 after the mall opened .

It was like May or June of 1984.

Wonder why the guy (Stephen)that wrote the man article thought Westside Theater now “houses a church”?

Westside was owned by Cobb’s Theatres, who also had Lakeside I - IV in Metairie. The last listing I found was May 13, 1984 for “The Bounty”
