The Dixie Theatre was open in 1940. The small theatre seated 350. It was operated by Southern Amusements and was listed as a Negro Theatre. It is located at the corner of S. Railroad Avenue and Reid Street.

The Dixie theatre building still exists. It is located at the corner of S. Railroad and Reid St., and is the current home of ACTS, (Artists Civic Theatre and Studio) one of two active community theatre groups in Lake Charles. The picture shown here is of a vacant lot approximately four (4) city blocks down the street from the actual Dixie Theatre location.

That’s interesting. I didn’t know about the Dixie. The only theatre I was aware of that was an African-American theatre in Lake Charles was the Ebony. This was back in the ‘70s.
