The Cine Roosevelt is a true wonder. A family owned theatre still in business. Located near Eleanor Roosevelt Avenue in San Juan, this theatre still draws crowds every weekend for its first-run features. It has been operating since the late-1940’s, originally a single-screen theatre, it was twinned in around 2004.
Attending this theatre is a great old fashioned experience. The owners still sell tickets and greet you when you arrive and say "We hope you enjoy the feature" when you leave.
Shaped like a plane hangar, the Cine Roosevelt is not a great architectural gem, but its old fashioned charm makes it a priceless treasure. It was closed on September 23, 2021.

Hi, Stephen. I don’t know, I never heard of him until know. When we were in the business the independent distributors were Marti, who also owned a theater in Puerto Nuevo; World Films (Pedro Lopez); Pepito, who handled Rank Films (I forgot his last name); and later you of course. Note to LOS: Thaks for your comment. Do we know each other? Andres.

Andy its me…Marcial…you are the man when to movies in Puerto Rico we are talking!
Actually, Cine Roosevelt now boasts two screens – it was renovated a few years ago. Its shape is not that of a hangar but of a Quoset hut, which belies a possible birth of the structure as a military one, back in the 1940s. Many Quoset huts, their military use long gone, survive to this day in Puerto Rico (one of them employed as a Roman Catholic temple), but Cine Roosevelt is the only example I know of a Quoset hut used as a movie house.
Slight mistake – it’s Quonset hut.

In pic of Sep. 7 above the theater looks different because of the marquee. I guess the new marquee was added when the theater was twinned. Glad is still operating.
I am doing a documentary about Cine Roosevelt. If you have any memorabilia or information about Teatros Cobian, the original owners of the cinema, please contact me at
The Roosevelt now shows first run movies. But I recall back in the 90’s the Roosevelt theater was the place to watch old movies.
ROOSEVELT CINE CLOSURE
We regret to inform you that effective on Thursday, September 23, 2021, the Roosevelt Cinema ceases its operations. For 73 years Roosevelt Cinema was a community icon and place of family entertainment.
The shutdown by the COVID 19 Pandemic for a year hurt us a lot. We reopened last March 4, 2021, with reduced attendance due to Pandemic, government restrictions, and simultaneous Streamings on TV from premiere films.
We thank our employees, the public, the collaborators and all the people who one way or another supported us throughout the years of film operation, just like when we reopened last March 4.
