Victoria Playhouse

Located in the Aston district to the north of Birmingham city centre. The Victoria Playhouse was opened on 16th December 1924 with Marie Prevost in “Cornered”. This imposing building was built for Mr. A.W. Rogers to replace his Premier Picture Palace on Litchfield Road, Aston. Seating was provided in stalls and circle levels.

In later years it was taken over by the Victoria Playhouse Group, and was closed on 3rd August 1963 with Ed Fury in “Ursus in the Valley of the Lions” and James Stewart in “Where the River Bends”. It was demolished and the site was redeveloped for housing and road widening.

I spent many a happy hour or more here as a child and teenager in the 1950s/60s.

The architect’s surname is Lovegrove, not Lovecraft, according to the caption under the drawing and the text on the page Tinseltoes linked to.
