Located on Calle 62 between 59 and 61. The Cine Teatro Merida opened on 9th December 1949 with a Spanish film "Locura de Amor" (Madness Of Love) starring Sarita Montiel and Jorge Mistral. Designed in a lavish Art Deco style to the plans of architect Gaetano Maglione, seating was provided for 2,300. It was closed as a cinema in 1992.
Later taken over by the State Government, it was renovated and re-opened on 17th August 2000 as an arts complex. The opening evening presented the Yukalpetan Orchestra and the Ballet Folklorico of Yucatan State in the main auditorium, which now seats 1,220. The 227-seat cinematheque opened with the film screened at the cinemas' original 1949 opening. There is also an an art gallery inside the building.
