The Alexander Theatre was opened on August 14, 1954, with the Cinemascope film "The Robe" starring Richard Burton. It was built for, and operated by independent exhibitor John Alexander.
The facade was in a Colonial Revival style, with a pediment above the central section. Inside the auditorium, seating was provided on a stadium plan, with a separate raised stepped section at the rear. The ceiling had a series of four stepped alcoves across, which contained concealed lighting. There was a crying room provided at the rear, for mothers and babys, which contained cribs and playpens.
