Camden Theatre

Located in the Caulfield South suburb, south-east of Melbourne. The Camden Theatre opened in 1935 with seating provided in stalls and circle levels. It was independently operated, and closed in 1962.

It was converted into a Brunswick 10-pin bowling alley and in recent years has become in indoor bowls club, which was still open in 2018. The decorative details of the façade have now been rendered over. It was demolished in November 2021.

Is the indoor bowls club, ten pin bowling, of carpet bowls?

Was converted into a ten pin bowl (Brunswick Bowl) after being a cinema, but that failed and it’s now an indoor bowls club. In its time it was Melbourne’s third biggest cinema; only the Regent in Collins Street (extant) and the Palais St Kilda (extant) were / are bigger. The dress circle of the Camden is still in situ. As you’d expect, it’s upstairs via what appear to be original staircase, and is a comfy place to watch the bowls. The club is open in the cooler months only. Current May 2018.

Why Camden you ask.

Caulfield South was first known as Camden Town.
