Carlton Theatre

The Carlton Theatre opened December 25, 1937 with seating listed at 788. The theatre located on Main Street was a mainstay in downtown Evansvile until it closed in 1959. Most of its life it was operated by Premiere Theatres. The building has since been demolished and is a parking lot.

The Carlton Theatre was the subject of this article in Boxoffice of April 30, 1938. There’s a photo of the narrow and rather plain auditorium, and another depicting the splendid black glass front. The Carlton was designed by the firm of Warweg & Hagel (architect Earl O. Warweg and engineer John Hagel.)

Two additional photos of the Carlton Theatre are linked from this page at Historic Evansville. In a late 1937 shot, the marquee says “The New Carlton Will Open Christmas Day.” The largest version shows some of the Art Deco detailing at the top of the Vitrolite facade.
