Biografen Rival

A stunning Art Deco style gem opened on 26th December 1937 with a seating capacity of 1,218 in orchestra and balcony levels. It was designed by architect Rolf Hagstrand, with interior decorations by Marcus Madrid Lorentsen. Located inside the lower ground floor of the Rival Hotel on the quiet residential island of Sodermalm in the south of Stockholm.

The hotel was bought by Benny from ABBA and lovingly restored including the cinema which held the World premiere of the film “Mama Mia” in 2008.

It is a great shame that this splendid cinema is not used for regular screenings. However, when I visited, in August 2018, the Hospitality Manageress was only too pleased to open up the auditorium, so at least I got to see it. You will notice, in the photos I took from the stage, the black curtain pulled halfway across the stalls. There is a matching curtain on the other side; these are used to produce a more intimate atmosphere when the full capacity is not required.
