Located in the southwest London inner city district of Brixton. Originally, the building was the Brixton Hall. It was taken over by Electric Theatres(1909) Ltd. and opened as the Theatre de Luxe on 29th May 1909. Seating was provided for over 400 tip-up seats using the main floor, which was covered with red carpet. The ‘picture sheet’ measured 20 feet x 20 feet and boasted to be one of the largest screens in London. The cinema was equipped with a ‘straight’ church type organ.

In August 1915 the balcony was brought into use, increasing the seating capacity to 945. The Theatre de Luxe closed after the end of World War I.

Just a correction, as a balcony was not “added” in 1915, since the building had actually been built with this facility in the first place, although initially it was operated for cinema use with only the ground floor seating in use. Similarly, Theatre did not close in 1918, and the building was originally called the Brixton Hall.
