Capitol Cinema

The Capitol Cinema opened on 21st October 1929. It was independently operated. It was equipped with a Standaart organ, and had its own orchestra and a cafe. Variety shows were programmed as well as films.

It was taken over by Associated British Cinemas(ABC) from 19th May 1930 and they continued to operate it until it closed on 12th December 1959. The final films shown were "The Man Who Could Cheat Death" starring Anton Diffring and "The Evil That is Eve"(Une Manche et la Belle) starring Henri Videl.

The building was purchased by the Marks & Spencer chain of stores for an extension to their adjacent store. It was demolished and the M&S extension was built, this has since closed.

I remember the Capitol well, my Mother took me and my sister to it almost every Saturday afternoon, we watched such films as the Bowery Boys and Joe Palooka along with many other films of the day. Happy days!
