News About This Theater

Rex Theatre ... Pensacola Florida .. 1986

Rex Theatre opened November 21, 1937 with Wendy Barrie in “A Girl With Ideas”, the building was a conversion of a former furniture store by architectural firm Yonge & Hart of Pensacola, FL.

The theatre was closed in 1977. It briefly reopened as a Cinema ‘n Drafthouse on July 23, 1982. Once the theatre closed the building went through several renovations and in 2012 was purchased by the Harvest Church who renovated the building and moved in April 17, 2015. The building is used as a live theatre and screens movies once a month.

Can somebody please put up some information about the Pen and Florida theatres in Pensacola. Being stationed there in 1959-60, 1964-1965 and then again in the 80’s I visited these theatres many times besides the Saenger.

The theater recently underwent an extensive restoration and I am happy to say it has now reopened as of April 17, 2015. Great to see yet another part of downtown Pensacola be brought back to life.

Status should be changed to open. The restoration is beautiful. Generation Church meets here, but the building was restored as a theatre used by a church. Pensacola Cinema Art exhibits movies about once a month.

The space is rented out to a convention I am going to this weekend. I am going to try to poke around and determine if the movies being shown are DCP. I’ll try to report back.
