Broadway Cinema

Located in the inner city west London district of Hammersmith. Designed by the great and prolific theatre architect Frank Matcham, the Broadway Cinema opened on 22nd December 1912 and it was operated by Cinema Trust Co. Ltd.

From 23rd December 1927 it was taken over by Savoy Cinemas who were soon to be merged with Associated British Cinemas (ABC). By the early-1930’s it was known as the Broadway Super Cinema and reverted back to the name Broadway Cinema from 1946.

It closed on 12th September 1977 with Maria Fiore in “Red Light Girls” (“Prostituzione”) and Edwige Fenech in “Lover Boy” (“Grazie…nonna”) after the collapse of part of the ceiling, and was demolished in June 1978, to be replaced by an office and retail development.

No, it was not opossite the Apollo, (ex. Odeon ex. Gaumont) but on the corner of Queen Caroline Street and Blacks Road. With the entrance in Queen Caroline Street.
I only went to that cinema a few times, unfortunately I do not have any pictures of it, exept in my mind!.

The ABC Broadway Cinema can be seen in the upper photo from 1965, with a recent view of the same scene by ‘roll the dice’ in the lower photo here:
