Sing-along “Sound of Music” to play 498 theaters on October 19 & 26

CENTENNIAL, CO — In celebration of the forty-fifth anniversary of the original release of “The Sound of Music,” the film will be presented in almost five hundred theaters for two evenings in October in a high definition, digitally-restored version. The showings are being coordinated by NCM Fathom events and several other sponsors.

Presented by NCM Fathom, Rodgers & Hammerstein: An Imagem Company and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, in association with Sony Music Entertainment, Trapp Family Lodge, South Pacific Tour and Austrian Tourism, The Sound of Music Sing-Along Event will also include the exclusive “I’ll Sing Once More: The Sound of Music Today” featurette. Audiences will be whisked back to Salzburg for a travelogue where the classic was filmed, and be treated to contemporary and surprising tributes ranging from modern dance and rock band salutes to an all-marionette version.

There is more about the event here and tickets are available online here.

It is coming to three theaters in Asheville, but I don’t think any of them will show it in 70mm. :(

it’ll be coming to a number of theatres in and around Boston. There were a lot to choose from this time around, so I chose the movie theatre closest to where I live, and bought my ticket there. The only thing that bothers me about these special events is that they’re so obviously big promos for expensive Blu-Ray DVD’s to make people stay home and watch them on the television so that they won’t go to the theatres to see them. How sad.

The projection that they’re doing for this event is 4k, since the film was restored with 4k technology. The Bluray will come out in November. I saw Sound of Music on VHS in widescreen THX, and it was fun to watch. It was on one tape, although the intermission music and overture was cut out for length reasons. Back to the Future is also doing a promotion like this for its 25th anniversary.

I saw “The Sound of Music” a week ago last Tuesday in an AMC Theatre not too, too far from where I live. Although it was a mostly empty theatre, it was fun. I have no intention of purchasing the Blu-Ray DVD of TSOM, however, first because I don’t like to always watch films on DVD at home, secondly because I don’t have any kind of DVD player, and have no intention of buying one, and, thirdly, since Blu-Ray DVD’s don’t work on standard DVD players, a special Blu-Ray DVD player is necessary, and those can get wickedly expensive! I’d rather spend that money for something else, thanks!

I took my sons to see the picture last Tuesday—it was a little too long for the seven-year-old (an intermission would have helped a lot,) but the nine-year-old thought it was great, especially the part at the end when the family was escaping from the (hiss) Nazis, but he also really enjoyed the singing. Daddy liked it too; the Captain being about the coolest single father I’ve seen in either TV or the movies (now if only I can get one of those whistles, some uniforms for the kids and a hot aristocrat girlfriend…) My only other complaint would be that it was shown on a “school night,” not the best time for a family film. Other than that, it was great to see TSOM in a real theater, with a real audience to hiss the villians and cheer the heroes, and to share a real movie-going experience with my children.

I did see “Sound of Music” back in October, as I’d planned, at an AMC in Cambridge’s Harvard Square. It was lots of fun, but there sure weren’t very many people there that night.
