Capitol Theater loses its marquee

OLYMPIA, WA — On Monday, Jan. 28, demolition began on the marquee of the Capitol Theater.

The structure was added to the building in 1940, but it hadn’t been lit-up since the early 1990s. While the marquee itself was OK, the awning was beyond repair.

Tearing the structure off the building revealed four stained glass windows. The round windows depict four of the nine Muses of Greek mythology. They were crafted by Northwest artist Ray Nyson, The Olympian newspaper reports.

The marquee that is being removed is not the Capitol Theater’s original marquee. The first one on the theater was a vertical sign, and there is talk of adding a new marquee to mimic that one, The Olympian reports.

A full story and photos of the demolition are available online at theOlympian.

A similar 1950s marquee hid details from the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor MI until it was removed and replaced with a smaller marquee which showed off the facade instead of hiding it.
