BEAUFORT, SC — About three weeks ago, a group of people headed by Bill Gerke and is brother-in-law, Joe Barth, purchased the Highway 21 Drive-In Theater in Beaufort, South Carolina.

The refurbished drive-in reopens its gates Friday, April 30 with second-run screenings of “50 First Dates” and “Starsky and Hutch.” Plans include a move to first-run features after the theater is re-established.

The new owners will add a flea market on the weekends, billboard advertising on the fences and under the screen, and a playground for children. The concession stand and vendor spaces have been renovated.

Tickets will cost $8 per car, with the option of using your car’s FM radio or a pole-mounted speaker. The Highway 21 Drive-In phone number is (843) 846-4500. Their website is www.hwy21drivein.com.

The only other operating drive-in in South Carolina is the Monetta Drive-In, in Monetta, South Carolina. Known as “The Big Mo”. Their web address is www.thebigmo.com.

I can’t wait for this theater to reopen. I’m in the Beaufort area occasionally, so now I’ll finally have the chance to watch a movie here!
