The MGM Empire opened on November 8th 1928 and immediately became a London landmark. The premiere programme featured a silent picture, ‘Trelawny of the Wells’ starring Norma Shearer. Sound was in its infancy, but the screen did speak on opening night - a newsreel and special greetings from the stars.
