Photograph taken on Tuesday 21st November 1933 showing the front of the newly created Gaumont Palace. Gaumont British Architect William Edward Trent, assisted by William Sydney Trent were responsible for the building. Constructed by McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd London. This new building replaced a previous cinema that stood on this site for twenty years before a disastrous fire completely destroyed the entire building in 1932. The new building has a restrained front being classical, relying for effect on a few decorative details contrasting with the simplicity of the brickwork. The three semi-circular carved stone panels above the tall central windows were the work of Frank Barnes and represent the three phases of the film, production, projection and presentation.
