Sidney Poitier Films at Columbus, Ohio - Page 19

It took a while for a new Sidney Poitier film to appear in 1967, but when it happened, two appeared on the same day. In late August, at the Town & Country and the University City, “To Sir, With Love” opened with Poitier the sole star. The film ranked as the ninth most popular movie of 1967. Helpful, also the hit title song by Lulu, which went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks. Opening, in Columbus, on the same date was “In the Heat of the Night,” at Loew’s Ohio and Cinema East. Poitier was top-billed with Rod Steiger, the second lead. The film was ranked, nationally, as the thirteenth biggest hit of 1967. In total, a Sidney Poitier movie appeared in seven of 1967 months. As a measure of his success, Poitier was ranked as the seventh biggest box office star for 1967. Historically, he was the first black actor or actress to be voted by national theater exhibitors for the Top Ten Box Office list.
