The 5th Ward African American business district where the Booker T. Washington Theatre was is in the lower left corner on Odin turned Lyons Avenue (photo on top).

Phase 1 of the Gulf Freeway project knives the business district in two (photo on bottom). From the reports of the era, the displacement of homes and businesses forever alters the areas. Another problem is noise, dust, and air quality. But it’s frequent and sometimes permanent road closures made it very challenging for folks on the left to the remaining places at right and the folks on the right side to traverse left.

Don’t despair because phase two in urban renewal simply wiped out basically everything on the left in the upper 2000s of Lyons and the area is desolate in contemporary times.
