Regent Theatre

Colorized photo - just prior to opening in 1928 - of the Regent Proscenium “delicately carved with its designs of shells and masks of comedy and tragedy, On the great golden drop curtain (which cost over 1000 pounds) are woven patterns in blue of Pan with his pipes”. Twenty five years later the orchestra pit was covered by a stage extension, with the curtain line and screen position brought forward to the location arrowed. This structural alteration (which included reducing the size of the side boxes) enabled a wider screen to be installed for the new CinemaScope format - which was introduced in 1953 by Twentieth Century-Fox (who owned Hoyts Theatres Ltd. at the time).
