Regent Theatre

Daniel Mas was the final Regent orchestra leader. A violinist, originally from Buenos Aires, he had arrived in Melbourne in 1938 from Europe and was soon placed in charge of the Regent and Plaza orchestras there. Moving north, he commenced at the Sydney Regent with “Irene” 19th July 1940. He remained as conductor for two years, then returned to the Melbourne Regent until its destruction by fire 30th April 1945. He returned to the Sydney Regent a few days later, where he remained until the orchestra was disbanded - at short notice - on 10th March 1949. After this, Mas had difficulty finding musical employment. Hoyts re-engaged him briefly - to utilize his worldly charm - when they launched a ’Continental’ policy at their newly named Paris theater in September 1954. When I started at the Regent in November 1968 he was working as doorman/usher across the road at the Roma Cinema.
