Roxy Theatre

Influenced perhaps by the sudden death of his mother in July 1940, Woodrick decided to move on. In December 1940 Fred Yardley agreed to purchase the theater, but due to ‘settlement difficulties’ the sale fell through. (A few months later Yardley took over Kandos & Rylstone), Then in April 1941 James Arthur Wheeler (1894-1967) bought the Roxy and remained there throughout the decade. In December 1949 new proprietors took over – Herbert Henry Martin in partnership with Allan Walter Doolan (who had earlier managed Blackheath). The team promptly put in a new screen, upgraded the sound, and made other improvements - including plans for new seating. They also investigated the possibility of screening at Melrose Hall Emu Plains, but the committee there rejected the proposal.
