View from front of auditorium before official opening of Eugene Mollo’s striking modern design which vastly contrasted to the old exterior. The main attraction of the auditorium was undoubtedly the splay walls with cream serrated fibrous panelling sandwiched between shaped woodwork painted in ebony black, with one horizontal panel sweeping across the circle front merging into either side splay wall. All lighting was concealed, the splay walls central feature being vertical round tapered wedges illuminated from behind. The screen was enclosed by gilded columns either side with front bowed enclosure below, dark green velvet screen curtains with gold silk festoon pelmet, these were lit by footlights below concealed behind the bowed enclosure. Walls and ceiling were decorated with beige Marb-L-Cote and speckled with a deep moss green metallic paint. Attention should be drawn to the plush fitted carpet in an Art Deco floral pattern of light beige, green and red amongst black wavy lines each enclosed in dark brown diamond box. Carpet supplied by T. F. Firth & Sons Ltd., Yorkshire from a design by |Mollo. Seating upholstered in light green supplied and fitted by Griffin & Spalding Nottingham.
