Tivoli Theatre and Roof Garden King George Square, Brisbane, QLD - 1956
Photo - Centre for Gov in Qld.
Located on Albert Street opposite Brisbane City Hall, on what today is known as King George Square. The Tivoli Theatre was built in 1914 and opened on 15th May 1915. Designed by noted theatre architect Henry Eli White, the Tivoli Theatre had 1,800 seats in stalls and circle levels, and a Roof Garden Theatre which had 1,200 seats.
The Roof Garden
The Roof Garden Theatre was enclosed with a ceiling and large openings on the side-walls to allow air flow. Both auditoriums could stage live acts and films, sometimes with the same print of a film playing in both auditoriums, and on occasions the stage acts would also appear on both stages. These practices lasted into the 1950’s
The Tivoli Theatre and Roof Garden was independently operated by Haymarket Tivoli Theatres Ltd. In later years the seating capacities were reduced to 1,374 in the Tivoli Theatre and 1,038 in the Roof Garden Theatre. It was closed and demolished in 196 - NOTES BY KEN ROE
