Kings Theatre, Russell Street Melbourne Victoria - Opened Sat July 11, 1908

The King’s Theatre in Melbourne, Australia, was located in Russell Street between Bourke Street and Little Collins Street. Opening in 1908, it was designed by William Pitt for the theatrical entrepreneur William Anderson. The original drawing of the facade is shown on this page. It should be noted that the first name chosen was “The Victoria”, later changed to “The Kings”

The King’s Theatre was a major live theatre & cinema during the first half of the twentieth century, closing on 13th February 1958, to be re-modeled by Greater Union. The auditorium was gutted to create a cinema with seating in stalls and circle levels. It re-opened as the 1,054-seat Barclay Theatre on 12th December 1958 with Charlton Heston in the VistaVision production “The Ten Commandments” it operated as a cinema until closing in 1976. It was demolished and the 6-screen Greater Union Russell Cinemas was built on the site and opened in November 1978. Contributed by Greg Lynch –
