Bijou Theatre 217 Bourke Street, Melbourne, VIC - 1902

The Bijou Theatre opened by 1902, the Bijou Theatre was upstairs, at the back of a grand arcade, and the Gaiety Theatre was downstairs in the front of the building. By 1911 they were showing films. In 1920 only the Gaiety Theatre was still open and that had closed by the late-1920’s. It was demolished in 1934.

About the Bijou Theatre *

The first theatre, built in 1876, was originally named the Academy of Music, and was renamed the Bijou Theatre in 1880. It was destroyed by fire on Easter Monday in 1889.

A new, larger Bijou Theatre was built on the site, opening in 1890. The new theatre seated around 2,000 across three levels. The theatre was further renovated and altered in 1907.
