Located in the north Melbourne district of Brunswick. The Alhambra Theatre was opened in 1922 by the Crispe & Smith chain. It was soon taken over by Hoyts Theatres. It was a very basic cinema (some would say it was a ‘flea-pit’), which had the steel roof beams exposed in the auditorium, exposing the corrugated iron sheeting which was the roof!
Seating was provided in stalls and circle levels. In later years it was modernised and given an Art Deco style.
Hoyts Theatre closed Hoyts Alhambra Theatre in 1960. It was converted into an ice skating rink, and was later used as a tyre sales business which continues in 2016.
