The Alhambra opened in 1915 owned and run by Percy Allen. Hoyts Theatres Ltd would gain company ownership in 1929 until the time of it’s closure in August 1959. TV Week printed an article in the same month of Alhambra’s demise titled “Death of Our Theatres”, citing four other Melbourne cinemas which had announced closure due to the boom in Television and subsequent drop in cinema patrons. A sad outcome for both cinema owners and lovers.
