Majestic Picture Theatre

On November 19, 1923 Admiral Sir Guy Gaunt opened a new picture theatre on Church St. in Norton. The Majestic was one of the new “super cinemas”, able to take audiences of many hundreds of people at once, seated in front of a very large screen. It had its own orchestra and featured variety acts as well as films. The cost of erecting the theatre was 15000 pounds, had original seating of 800 and was one of the best equipped in the north. By 1935, Cecil S. Read was the proprietor. In March 1949 was purchased for 51250 pounds by Eskay LTD who owned 14 other cinemas in Derbyshire and Nottingham. The Majestic {then with a disminished 656 seats}was finally declared unviable in 1955 and was closed.
