Empire Theatre 126 York Street, Albany, WA

Empire Pictures began screening regularly at the Princess Pavilion in 1906, another venue which was also used as a skating rink. In 1911, West'(managed in Perth by Thomas Coombe) announced their intention to build on this site the state’s first purpose-built cinema in a rural area - the Empire Theatre, Albany.

The Empire Theatre opened on 31st October 1912. THe Empire Theatre closed on 25th September 1963 with “Hatari!”. The theatre building was later used as a skating rink, a youth amusement centre, a live theatre, and a nightclub. The theatre building is now a jewellery store (MB - Mark Blyth Fine jewellery)-(main part of building) and a recycled store (Electric Ladyland) on the corner (by 2019 a barbers shop) - Notes by David Coppock.
