Grand Theatre 38 Bay Street, Petone - Atmos interior 1930s.
Notes - The Grand Theatre was designed by Henry Eli White who also designed the 1,552 seat, St James Theatre in Wellington (opened in Courtenay place in 1912 as His Majesty’s Theatre). Henry also designed a number of theatres in Australia
The Grand Theatre Petone opened c1917. Seating for 900 was provided in stalls and circle levels. It was given an Art Deco style makeover in the 1930’s which is probably why this photo was taken.
By 1946 it was part of the Kerridge Theatres chain and in the 1950’s Kerridge-Odeon. The Theatre closed in the early 1960’s. The building has now been converted into the Grand Theatre apartments, 38-40 Bay Street - Notes : Courtesy Old Wellington Region Facebook page.
