The photograph above was taken on 20th July 1936 before the cinema had opened. Architects were W & T Milburn of Sunderland. Contractors Bell Bros. (Sunderland) Ltd. Red neon lit the ‘Plaza’ name on the tower, leading down and changing colour into mauve for the horizontal banding across the top of the façade.
