The Sumter City Hall and Opera House was built in 1893. Around 1935, the famous architect Erle G. Stillwell, was hired to remodel it. He, moved the City Hall offices to the second floor and converted the ground floor to a state of the art movie theater, renaming it, Carolina Theater.
