Plaza 6

These fiberglass bears were the mainstays of the dead Leavenworth Plaza Mall. Its anchors were J.C. Penney, Montgomery Ward and Safeway at its opening in 1967 along with these two bears in the common area. But pulling up anchor were Wards (replaced by Sears with Sears then closing), Penney’s and Safeway. But the bears stayed.

Alco Stores replaced one anchor slot and closed. And Dickinson Theatres moved into Alco’s spot in 1993. The inset picture of the theater is Big Screen Guide’s and is used to show the proximity of the bears to the Dickinson Plaza 6 Cinemas. The bears were always right by the lit coming attraction poster boxes. The theater closed after 17 years of operation on August 26, 2010 as school was going into session. Advertised shows for August 27th films were cancelled. But the bears stayed.

A decision was made in 2013 to close the common “mall” area and Leavenworth Plaza was considered a dead mall. After 45 years, the bears had grown impatient with the conditions and they moved on. To visit the two bears, you need to head to The First City Museum at 743 Delaware St.
