As captioned, this was taken prior to the first of two modernisations. The 1961 project resulted in all decorative features being either removed or concealed. The boxes remained in situ, albeit panelled over, and the Upper Circle/‘Gods’, whilst still visible from the front stalls, was no longer in use. Later work saw the removal of the boxes and the sealing off of the ‘Gods’. The Pavilion, whilst comfortable and boasting 70mm, was now very bland and functional but still ‘streets ahead’ of anything on offer today!
