Gwen Younger writes - In the 1956 I remember family pictures in the Shire Hall; the “orange lights” for the welcome back for Bev Long (nee MacFarlane) as Miss Victoria;

The annual Christmas Pageant at the Shire Hall in
1957/58 when I was an Angel with Wallace Bruce directing.

In the 1950’s the Yarrawonga High School held its Speech Nights in the Shire Hall – the teachers all wore their academic gowns regardless of the heat!

Des O’Meara Real Estate had monthly Auctions in the Community Hall.

Leonard Teale presented Bush Poetry in the Shire Hall in the 1990’s. The film area of the Shire Hall was used for fundraising events for the Miss Australia Quest for the Spastic Society in the 1990’s.

The Yarrawonga Young Farmers conducted the Annual Show night dance in the Hall, along with many other organizations that was ‘The Place’ for local dances.

I have attended dozens and dozens of activities in the Hall which bring back happy memories to name a few, Birthday parties, weddings, Quilters displays, Arts displays, Flower Shows, Blood Bank, Baby Shows, dressing our daughter for dance concerts in the Shire Hall, worked for Country Women’s Association at High Teas, auctions and music concerts.

The CWA had a “Wool Day” with “Merema” woollen garments from Geelong and Finlay in the The CWA 50th Birthday celebrations was attended by State CWA Dignitaries in the Shire Hall.

Recently, the CWA organised the “Are you OK” Day held in the Shire Hall (see Yarrawonga Chronicles) to support mental health.

Our son Chris, as a student at the Yarrawonga High School, became involved in setting up the sound for Speech Night which was held in the Shire Hall. This kindled and interest in lighting live theatre productions in the Shire Hall with the local Allegro Theatre Company.

Later this hobby became Chris’s work as he used his talent in Australia and many countries around the world, including the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympic GameS - Notes by Gwen Younger. May 2020.
