Sidney Poitier Films at Columbus, Ohio - Page 21

To qualify for the 1968 Oscar Awards, pictures would have to show in New York City or Los Angeles in 1967. “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” was released in December, 1967 to qualify for the 1968 presentation. Which, technically, means its box office tally was included in 1967. This makes the film the fourth biggest hit of 1967. However, the film did not open until March in the Columbus area. Poitier’s two first-run movies of 1968 were “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” at the Drexel and “For Love of Ivy” at the RKO Palace and Cinema East in August. “In the Heat of the Night” won five Academy Awards: Film Editing (Hal Ashby), Best Actor (Rod Steiger), Best Picture (Walter Mirisch), Best Adapted Screenplay (Stirling Silliphant), and Sound (Samuel Goldwyn Studio Sound Department). “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay (William Rose) and Best Actress (Katherine Hepburn).
