Odeon Luxe Darlington

Evening Despatch Entertainments Page 1961:-

By now Rank had only two outlets in Darlington, the Odeon (Majestic) and Gaumont. The Empire had closed a few months earlier whilst the Arcade had become the Majestic Ballroom at the end of 1956. The latter venue also appears in the cinema column and this must - at least initially - have caused confusion among the natives as the Bondgate entrance was almost directly opposite the Odeon which itself had been the Majestic prior to becoming the Odeon…….

To further compound matters, the cinema which appears at the top of the column, the ABC (former Regal) has ended up as the Odeon!

The Scala cinema was still going at this time and despite claims here and elsewhere that it became the Essoldo, it does not appear with that company’s advertising block, the top of which can just be seen at the foot of the cinema column.
