In the 70’s, the theatre was flooded by the Flood of ‘72, and was slated for demolition. A local group rescued the theatre however, and it was reopened in 1977 with the inside of the main theatre completely whitewashed, covering, amongst other things, the ornate mural above the stage, since restored.
