The auditoria of the Sydney and Adelaide Regents had much in common in their decor, though I have always felt that they were better disposed in Adelaide which was unquestionably the most architecturally consistent of all the big city Regents – it had a unity of style throughout from the front doors to back stage. In earlier days the arches were lit in a myriad of changing colours, but lighting was later confined to a golden glow reflected off the travertine walls and the ceiling troughs. I have always preferred the simple good taste of the Regent to the many grand theatres which in my opinion were grossly over-ornamented. Some of the plain wall surfaces were decorated by costly tapestry hangings in the 1930s.
