GONE WITH THE WIND 1967 - SCREENED IN 70MM & 6 track Stereophonic sound.
The Metro Theatre in Johannesburg (now part of the Nu Metro chain) has a long history of high-end cinematic presentations dating back to its opening in 1932. Gone with the Wind was famously re-released globally in 70mm Wide Screen with stereophonic sound starting in 1967.
The 70mm Re-Release: In 1967, MGM converted the original 1939 35mm negatives of Gone with the Wind into a 70mm format to compete with the “roadshow” epics of the era. These screenings featured 6-track stereophonic sound and a “tilt-and-scan” simulated widescreen ratio.
Metro Cinema Johannesburg was a flagship for MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) in South Africa. Historically, such premier “Metro” houses were the primary candidates for 70mm equipment installation to host these prestigious roadshow engagements.
